Included here are phenomena that are on the outer edge of historical patterns, especially severe or unseasonal events.

The Swiss Reinsurance Company are warning that natural disasters may cost insurance as much as $110 billion worldwide in 2010, five times more than last year.

Thomas Hess, chief economist of Zurich-based Swiss Re, said “We have already seen significant events in 2010,”... “The industry is therefore well-advised to prepare for much higher losses.”
