A Vague Memory

I was only a toddler when, me and my family where driving home from Alexandria, Minnesota toward our home in Ham Lake, Minnesota. It was me, my mom, my dad, my half sister, her mother, and my sister’s friend, all crammed in a car headed home. From what i was told, there had been recent sitings of tornadic activity around that area when we left our hotel.

We where all driving home, when my dad started to notice the sky turning an odd green color. Soon everyone in the car started to notice, but my sister did not take it likley. She was apparently very frightened by the sky and would everynow and then pop out a comment, like, “Dad, pull over now, get in a building! Oh, my god we’re all gonna die!” I’m not sure if those where actually the things she said, but she was very scared of tornadoes. She finally managed to pipe down by the time everyone got home.

My dad herded us all down to the basement, because by that time, the weather was raging. The wind was howling, and the sky had turned a sickly brown. We all where in the house, getting ready to go down to the basement, but my dad noticed that a portion of our privacy fence had been blown down. My mother would laugh, each time she told me this but i really think she was scared to death. My father showed no fear in the storm. Apparently his only worry was our precious fence. And what did he do? Well that crazy man took nails and a hammer and during the middle of a horrific storm went out in our backyard to fix the fence. My mother was angry and scared when my dad came back in, but she was happy we were all alive. But to me, it was just a vague memory…
